Why can't Unity save data on disk without having to change scene or quit

I understand it probably would slow down performance a bit but I've already lost so much work if I'd count over the years of using Unity, thanks to its way of handling data saving. Normally you keep hitting the Ctrl+S for a reason. I never miss a Ctrl+S after the smallest modification I make but in case of Unity this good habit has no effect. Because in case Unity crashes (which is quite frequent to be honest, like a couple of times a day), for some reason Unity ignores all the changes I've made in my scene, from the last time I changed scene or quitted Unity. Which means Unity actually writes the data to disk only at those rare events, not when you'd want it (ie. when you click Save). What keeps Unity from writing the scene modifications to disk not only when I close the scene but also when I hit Save?
